Tax is not a topic that usually gets conversations started, but with all the controversy about the proposed mining tax and the Henry Review it seems there is suddenly a lot to talk about.

And even on a personal level there have been some recent changes that may affect your hip pocket.

In April the federal government announced that it would raise taxes on cigarettes by an extra 25 percent. The hike added more then $2 to a packet of 30 cigarettes.

While a good revenue earner with the government saying that money would be pumped into the hospital system, small business owners hit back and said that the tax had the potential to hurt their businesses.

But do you think that more taxes are necessarily a bad thing?

According to some figures the 40 percent mining tax would mean that employees who are aged 30 will get an extra $108,000 in their super savings as a result of these moves.
