Hong Kong shares tumbled 1.40 per cent on Friday after heavy losses on Wall Street and following another batch of weak manufacturing data out of China.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index fell 269.94 points to 18,995.13 on turnover of HK$37.96 billion ($A4.89 billion).

Shanghai was closed for a public holiday.
