Hong Kong shares close lower

Hong Kong shares have closed 0.51 per cent lower.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index shed 97.68 points on Monday to close at 18,897.45 on turnover of HK$37.47 billion ($A4.82 billion).

Dealers were cautiously awaiting the outcome of a European Union summit at the end of the week.

Chinese shares closed down 1.63 per cent. The Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A and B shares, lost 36.77 points to 2,224.11 on turnover of 54.8 billion yuan ($A8.58 billion).
