Westpac will open its first branch in India after receiving a banking licence from the Reserve Bank of India.
The bank's first branch in India will open in Mumbai, Westpac institutional bank executive Rob Whitfield said on Monday.
"India is Australia's fifth largest trading partner and fourth largest export market so it is a very important market for our customers," he said in a statement.
"Extending our presence in India through our Mumbai branch will further position us to support our Australian customers with their trade and investment activities in India, and Indian customers with their increasing trade and investment flows with Australia."
No time frame was given for the Mumbai branch opening.
