South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries says it has won a 3.05 trillion won ($A2.53 billion) contract to build an offshore gas processing facility in Australia.

The facility, expected to be ready by the fourth-quarter of 2015, will be the world's largest offshore plant, a spokesman said.

It is part of a joint gas development project between Japan's Inpex, which has a 76 per cent stake, and French company Total SA, which holds the remaining stake.

Samsung Heavy received $15 billion ($A14 billion) worth of orders last year and aims to win orders totalling $12.5 billion this year.
