Nine Entertainment Co has appointed a former senior Aristocrat Leisure executive as the media company's new chief operating officer.

Simon Kelly, who was chief financial officer at the gaming machine maker between 2003 and 2009, joins Nine in late April.

Nine said in a statement on Monday Mr Kelly would replace Pat O'Sullivan, who was resigning after more than six years with the company to take an indefinite break from corporate executive roles.

Mr O'Sullivan would remain at Nine until June 30, 2012, Nine said.
