Metals miner PanAust has narrowly missed its target for copper production in 2011 despite a record output in December.

The gold, silver and copper miner said it produced 59,897 tonnes of copper in the year to December 31, at an average cash cost of $US1.01 ($A.98) per pound.

In October, PanAust had forecast annual production of 60,000 tonnes.

The company said it achieved record production from its Phu Kham operation in Laos in December, with 6,639 tonnes of copper concentrate produced, at a cash cost of 82 US cents per pound.

Normal production resumed at Phu Kham in November after severe rainfall in the middle of the year.

A full quarterly production report will be issued on January 24, when production guidance for 2012 is expected to be provided.
