Japanese shares opened lower on Monday after the government announced weak GDP data, following a mild rise in Friday's US markets.

The Nikkei index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange fell 0.07 per cent or 5.91 points to 8885.53. The Topix of all first section shares slipped 0.06 per cent or 0.46 points to 746.33.
