Melbourne newspaper the Herald Sun will start charging readers for online content next month.

The News Limited-owned publication will offer a combination of free and subscription-only content to online and mobile users and is set to release pricing details within weeks, Fairfax reports.

The newspaper is following in the footsteps of fellow News Limited publication The Australian, which shifted to a partial paywall last October.

Fairfax reports the move has seen a decline in the broadsheet's audience and traffic, according to industry data.

A spokeswoman for News Limited refused to say when the media company's other publications would start charging for online content.
