Telstra’s Asian strategy
OCT 31, 2012
Telstra is reported to have considered a bid for Consolidated Media Holdings (ASX: CMJ) but the ACCC kyboshed the deal, most likely because it would have taken Telstra’s  stake in Foxtel to 75%, and a 50% share in Fox Sports. Telstra already owns one of the nation’s largest media portfolios, with its existing 50% stake in Foxtel, Yellow and White Pages and a suite of BigPond websites and products. The portfolio is estimated to be worth up to $5 billion, according to the AFR.

Packer signs off with a smile
OCT 12, 2012
The ACCC opposed Seven Group getting hold of 50% of Fox Sports and that paves the way for News Corporation (ASX: NWS) to complete its takeover of Consolidated Media Holdings (ASX: CMJ), in which Packer holds 50%. Following the ACCC’s decision, Seven Group Holdings (ASX: SVW) has now said that it will vote its 25% holding in favour of News Corp’s offer at the shareholders meeting at the end of this month.

FN Arena Broker Call Headlines - 12 Oct 2012
OCT 12, 2012
RBS Australia rates as Upgrade to Buy from Hold (1) - Target $8.73 (was $8.50). With the ACCC shooting down Seven's bid for bid for Consolidated Media ((CMJ)), the broker notes the company has done a quick about face and now plans to accept a $3.45 per share bid on CMJ from News Corp ((NWS)). RBS thinks this is a brilliant move, noting the company will pocket about $475m in November. The price is good, debt levels will soon look so much better and the company's once Byzantine corporate structure will be more simplified. Forecasts are lifted, the target price rises and the recommendation is upgraded to Buy from Hold. More
