BAE Systems Australia will establish an aerospace component manufacturing operation in Adelaide to produce parts for the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) being developed in the US.

The company will manufacture titanium parts for the vertical tail fin on the new jet, which is designed to replace a range of current combat aircraft.

The fighter program will produce more than 3,000 aircraft over the next 25 years for the US and its allies, including Australia.

The SA government will provide support for the new manufacturing operations, with the work to be conducted by BAE Systems to be worth about $177 million.

Premier Jay Weatherill on Monday visited the JSF production facility in Fort Worth, Texas.

"Defence will form the foundation of South Australia's advanced manufacturing future and provide highly-skilled jobs," Mr Weatherill said.

"Already we have a strong reputation both nationally and globally for our expertise in defence manufacturing.

"These new capabilities open up a raft of opportunities in other aerospace, commercial and defence projects."

Defence Industries Minister Jack Snelling said that to complement the BAE Systems Australia operation, Rosebank Engineering would establish a specialised metal finishing facility in Adelaide.

"This combined capability does not currently exist in Australia," Mr Snelling said.

"Its establishment in Adelaide will drive long-term growth and job security in South Australia."
