Barossa Valley winemakers are tipping the 2013 vintage to be high quality thanks to a dry spring.

Wine producers have started crushing the season's first fruit beginning with chardonnay varieties.

They say the dry spring weather and careful irrigation during the hot weather in January has put minimal disease pressure on the fruit.

Jacob's Creek chief winemaker Bernard Hicken said while producers were keeping an eye on forecasts for high temperatures, everything was pointing to a high quality vintage in 2013.

"I believe we'll see some great wines from this year across a number of varieties and regions," he said.

"While recent weather has presented challenges, a very dry spring and a drier than average winter has resulted in very healthy fruit on the vines."
